Actually,  HDPE or High Density Polyethylene, a recycled plastic lumber which is impervious to insects, mold, mildew and salt water. HDPE never needs paint or stain, is more durable than wood, looks like painted wood and has a lifetime warranty against checking, rotting, splintering and  insect damage. We chose an extruder making a very high quality board with no voids, nice square corners and a  convincing grain.

We purchase truck loads of the plastic lumber and mill our own rail section in our wood shop. we have been using this material for several years have learned the techniques necessary. The striking contrast to the Ipe wood and clean white appearance is perfect. We feel that this product is far superior to the typical hollow, shiny, PVC rails that are available on the market, which rattle in the wind, look totally fake, crack in the cold weather, are offer no strength.

Although not durable enough for flooring this plastic lumber is the perfect choice for deck rails.
